Vernacular Writing

In India, with its ancient literary heritage, local languages have for a few centuries taken a back seat to English. For example, this blog post, about vernacular languages, is written in English. There is a catch here, 22 or not.

Now, using technology and the power of the World Wide Web, India’s vernacular languages are poised to take back their rightful positions. Internet connectivity and the all conquering mobile phone means that vernacular content can reach their readers like never before. Multi language websites in English and the local language will come into play. E-commerce will have to make the necessary changes to include the millions of consumers who would like to shop online in their mother tongue.

In the coming years, there will be a resurgence of vernacular writing as the playing fields level. It is now possible for even a first time author to publish his/her book and reach their readers anywhere in the world. Classical literature will once again be made available and the potential for some of them as mobile applications of their own is immense.
